Goldeneye Challenge: Aztec on 00 Agent, Under 8:45

Goldeney 007 for the legendary Nintendo 64 stands as arguably the greatest game of all-time, at least from this guy’s opinion.  At the very least, Rare’s epic Bond title will hold a permenent spot in my Top 5 Greatest Games List, and likely most everyone else’s as well (it had better!)  But enough of the grab-ass; let’s move on to the challenge!  Hit the link below for the challenge details, and pull your N64 out of the attic, because it’s Boris time.

Dark Souls Has Sold Over 2.3M Units

In October 2011, From Software released an unofficial sequel to the deathly-hard, highly-addicting “Demon’s Souls” under the similar name, “Dark Souls”.  Since then, the equally hard sequel has been rung up at cash registers around the world a whopping 2.3 million times.  That’s a staggering sales figure for any game, but for a title that many consider a “hardcore gamer niche”, that arguably makes it even more impressive.  As a huge fan of the series (please tell me this isn’t your first SQ experience), I am not surprised but if you had asked me yesterday for a SWAG estimate on the number of units moved, I would have came back with about 1-1.25M; I would have never thought that the 2 million barrier had been broken, but I am happy that it has because folks, this series is absolutely bad ass.  If you haven’t read much of my prose here at SQ, all you need to read is what my eloquent and esteemed colleague wrote in our official SQ “About” page; if you happened to have been addicted to Goldeneye’s Control Mission on 00 Agent mode like myself, then this series is for you.  Don’t even watch a trailer, or finish reading this article; go to your local game shack and pick at least one of these two titles up.  End of story.

Tragedy at the Boston Marathon Today

Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers go out to the victims, families, and everyone affected by the alleged bombings that occurred approximately two hours ago in the vicinity of the Boston Marathon finish line, killing two innocent spectators and wounding upwards of now 100+.  Although details are still emerging from the tragic scene, I will say this: based on the video, and the fact that there were multiple, simultaneous explosions in different locations, with a third now being reported at JFK Library, this appears to be a malicious, coordinated attack, and not a mere accident or underground gas pipe explosion.  Although I have never seen a gas line explosion in person, I have witnessed enough IEDs and what those can accomplish; the video feeds currently playing across the major news networks sadly appear more like the latter than the former.  From everyone here at SQ, our hearts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone affected today.  Hit the link below for links to the current news on the scene in Boston:

Minecraft PC Continues Climb; Reaches 10m in Sales

The Minecraft train continues to roll, as the mega-popular’s PC version of Mojang’s low-on-graphics, high-on-gameplay flagship title has now eclipsed the 10m sales mark.  Mojang’s lead designer and developer Jens Bergensten provided the official announcement via Twitter, and also gave Minecrafters a not-so-subtle glimpse into what will be added in the game’s upcoming 1.6 update.  Not bad for a video game that looks like it’s from 1995, eh?  Hit the link below for even more eye-popping, Minecraft stats; high-end video card not required.

First Dark Souls 2 Gameplay Footage Arrives

Addiction is a strong word, but when we’re talking about Demon’s Souls/Dark Souls, addiction may not be a strong enough word to describe how much I enjoy these games.  Above all else, the insane challenge and actual feeling of achievement with this series makes these games amazing.  When I sit down to play Demon’s Souls, I honestly feel like I’m playing an old school NES game with no save capability, except I’m seeing Playstation 3 graphics and not 8-bit pixels and sprites.  I could go on for pages, but let me just state that if you haven’t picked up Demon’s Souls or Dark Souls, you’re wrong.  Go fix yourself.  Enjoy the salivating footage, and hit the link below for more details/comments.

Elysium Official Movie Trailer

On August 9th, Matt Damon will join Jodie Foster in Niell Blomkamp’s (District 9) latest film, Elysium, which looks like Mass Effect and Halo combined.  That is definitely not a bad combination, as the entire sci-fi and action communities will surely eat this flick up in the box office come early August.  Elysium is officially on my to-see list.  Hit the link below for more details.

Legendary Speech: GySgt Walgren Before Marjah Assault

Take yourself back almost three years to February of 2010.  What were you doing then?  Were you in school, or at your last job?  For the Marines of 1/3, 1/6, 3/6, and 3/10, they were about to begin what was dubbed as the most dangerous combat operation since Fallujah with the commencement of Operation Moshtarak.  Their mission: clear the Taliban-infested city of Marjah, in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  While I have never set foot in Marjah, I did deploy just next door in Nawa district, having gone on many a patrol just outside of Marjah in the “friendly” area of Trek Nawa.  Before you watch this legendary speech by Gunnery Sergeant Walgren of 1/6 (1st Battalion, 6th Marines), try and imagine yourself as one of these young Marines that’s about to climb into a CH-53 helicopter and begin the assault.  Can you imagine the mental preparation you have to do to really prepare yourself for a mission like that, especially with all of the intel/news reports on how heavy the enemy activity was?  That’s where good leadership comes into play, and the video speech you’re about to witness is spine-tingling good.  You don’t have to be a good public speaker to be a good leader, but it is a good quality to have, and Gunny Walgren possesses it in spades.

Odd Gaming Tributes: The Elevator

After more than 160 years since its invention, the elevator remains arguably one of the most socially-awkward environments today.  Everyone stares straight ahead, talking is strictly forbidden, and everyone is hoping in the back of their mind that the lift doesn’t get stuck.  Or that Hannibal Lecter isn’t hiding on top of it.  Gaming has incorporated the awkward, but useful invention since the 1980’s in some very memorable games, such as TMNT: Turtles in Time, and the very first Mass Effect.  So how the heck does an elevator garner its own tribute on SQ?  Well, we labeled it as an “odd” gaming tribute, so we think that justifies the love, however through our nearly twenty some odd years of gaming experience, we’ve come to notice a few awesome trends that all revolve around the epic experience that is the virtual elevator; click that attractive link below for full, scientific results.

The Ben Show: Gangsta Granny Auditions Video

I have never seen The Ben Show before on Comedy Central, but this video has got me intrigued to try and catch the next episode.  This may very well be fake or staged, but I guarandamntee you the grandma at about the 59 second mark will make you pee your pants.  Well maybe not that extreme, but she will make you laugh.  Enjoy the Gangsta Granny Auditions; I’m off to find more clips from The Ben Show!

Tensions Mount After North Korea Destroys Asia

God bless The Onion.  My first experience with the Onion came in high school, when a buddy of mine brought one of their newspapers to school, and I’ve been hooked ever since.  Although this video was released a couple years ago, it may have more relevance now than it did in 2011.  Aside from going to the Onion’s website and looking at the publish date, what’s one way you can tell the video is at least a year old?  Answer after the link.

May 21st Is Xbox Durango Reveal Day

Raise your hand if you know who Paul Thurrott is.  Yeah, I didn’t raise mine either.  According to those in the know across the great Interweb, Mr. Thurrott appears to be a fairly legitimate source when it comes to anything Microsoft-related.  If you’ve been to his website, Supersite for Windows, then you may have indirectly read some of this work without even knowing it’s the same dude; regardless, now you (we) all know.  In a recent video blog, Mr. Thurrot dropped a major news bomb claiming that May 21st, 2013, will be the official Microsoft Xbox/Durango reveal day.  He also went on to reveal a few juicy details himself, as well as confirming a few previous reports that we’ve mentioned on SQ before.  Hit the link for the full report.
